A very determined frog is trying to escape a 30-foot deep well. Each day, it climbs up 3 feet, but during the night, it slips back down 2 feet. Assuming it starts climbing on Day 1, on which day will the frog finally reach the top of the well and escape?

Solution
Day 28 — The frog makes a net progress of 3 - 2 = 1 foot each day. Many people might assume it takes 30 days because of this. However, the trick is that on the final climb, the frog reaches the top and does not slip back down. After 27 days, the frog will have made a net progress of 27 feet and will be at the 27-foot mark. On Day 28, it starts at 27 feet and climbs another 3 feet. This brings its position to 27 + 3 = 30 feet, which is the top of the well. At this point, it escapes and does not slip back down. Therefore, it escapes on Day 28.
