Solution
25 — Let the two-digit number be represented as 10A + B, where A is the tens digit and B is the units digit.
When the digits are swapped, the new number is 10B + A.
According to the first condition, the new number is 27 greater than the original number:
10B + A = (10A + B) + 27
Subtract (10A + B) from both sides:
(10B + A) - (10A + B) = 27
9B - 9A = 27
Divide by 9:
B - A = 3
This means the units digit (B) must be 3 greater than the tens digit (A).
Let's list all two-digit numbers that satisfy this condition:
- If A=1, B=4, the number is 14 (swapped: 41; 41-14=27)
- If A=2, B=5, the number is 25 (swapped: 52; 52-25=27)
- If A=3, B=6, the number is 36 (swapped: 63; 63-36=27)
- If A=4, B=7, the number is 47 (swapped: 74; 74-47=27)
- If A=5, B=8, the number is 58 (swapped: 85; 85-58=27)
- If A=6, B=9, the number is 69 (swapped: 96; 96-69=27)
The second condition states that the number is a multiple of 5. A number is a multiple of 5 if its units digit (B) is either 0 or 5.
Looking at our list of possible numbers from the first condition (14, 25, 36, 47, 58, 69):
- Only 25 has a units digit of 5.
Therefore, the only number that satisfies both conditions is 25.
