If Alex is on the bus, the teacher then picks 5 guides out of those 15, giving Alex a 5/15 = 1/3 chance of being chosen as a guide. Multiply the two independent probabilities: (1/2) × (1/3) = 1/6. Many people mistakenly think the second step alone (1/3) is the answer, but they forget Alex must first be on the bus. The overall probability is therefore 1/6.
