Problem 4 - Entrance Test

A square city covers 20 km². A walking path runs around the inside edge of the city, 100 m from each side. What is the area of the path in square meters?

Correct: A

City side length = √20,000,000 ≈ 4472 m. Inner square side = 4472 − 200 = 4272 m. Inner area = 4272² ≈ 18,250,000 m². Path area = 20,000,000 − 18,250,000 ≈ 1,600,000 m².
