Polythene (or polyethylene) is a polymer formed by the polymerization of ethene (ethylene) monomers. The double bond in ethene breaks, and many ethene units join together to form a long chain polymer. Methane and Ethane are saturated hydrocarbons and do not easily polymerize to form polythene. Propene is the monomer for polypropylene.
